Safety Officer Responsibilities and Duties.

1. Circulate material received to appropriated members of the department.
2. Inspect the department to ensure the workplace meets the various safety requirements.
3. Ensure that monthly inspection of Fire Extinguishers, Exit Lights and Emergency Lighting, are carried out.
4. Respond to reports of unsafe conditions (e.g. electrical hazards, loose stair treads, etc.) by requesting repairs or maintenance.
5. In some circumstances, material may have to be prepared for annual submission to the Repairs and Alterations budget.

Basics
HSE officers must know federal and local guidelines pertaining to safety in the workplace, and communicate these rules to other employees. HSE officers inspect and document accidents or near-accidents in the workplace, finding out causes and implementing solutions. When there is an accident, HSE officers often work with medical staff.

Qualifications
Requirements to become an HSE officer vary, although most need at least a certificate proving they are qualified to determine the safety of a building. Certification courses are available both online and at vocational schools or community colleges. Others may need an associate degree in science or environmental technology.
