Consultant - Ecommerce Technical Suppor

Project Overview and Role:

The goal of the USAID Trade Reform and Development in Egypt (TRADE) Project is to boost Egypt’s international trade by increasing exports from Egyptian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and in particular New and Expanding Export-Ready Enterprises (NEEREs).

In order to achieve the Project’s goal, the project seeks to attain the following three Results:

  • Enhanced Export Capacity of SMEs in selected sectors
  • Strengthened public and private Trade-Support Institutions – (TSIs) e.g., Trade Associations,
  • Export Councils, etc.
  • Improved trade and investment policy, regulatory, and institutional environment

In implementing activities to accomplish the three results USAID TRADE aims to achieve the following targets, among others:

  • Generate USD225M in NEERE export revenue in selected sectors, collectively.
  • Help increase export revenue of TSI member companies benefiting from improved TSI services collectively, by 30%.
  • Help reduce cost/time and administrative procedures to trade.

To achieve those targets USAID TRADE will provide assistance to SMEs and TSIs in the following sectors:

  • Food processing
  • Engineering
  • Ready-made garments (RMG)
  • Home textiles
  • Chemicals/Packaging
  • Building materials


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the assignment is to support and enhance SMEs’ capacities to increase their exports through different ecommerce platforms and connect them to B2B international buyers through those platforms. The consultant will work closely with the project’s selected SMEs to assess their capacities, identify the technical assistance needs, connect them with different ecommerce players and actors worldwide, and provide them with the needed coaching and guidance.

Tasks

The consultant will support the USAID TRADE project with the following main responsibilities:

  • Work with USAID TRADE team to assess around 20 SMEs in terms of their readiness for ecommerce
  • Develop with USAID TRADE team ecommerce technical assistance action plans for SMEs.
  • Implement with USAID TRADE team the SMEs’ technical assistance action plans including field visits, one to one coaching, trainings, networking with service providers, etc.
  • Support USAID TRADE SMEs to connect with leading marketplaces, payment and logistics companies, and other major ecommerce ecosystem actors active in Egypt
  • Support USAID TRADE in building the capacities of Trade Support Institutions (TSIs) in ecommerce.

Deliverables

  • Assessment reports for around 20 SMEs.
  • Technical assistance action plans for 20 SMEs.
  • Monthly Progress report on the implementation of technical assistance action plans with SMEs
  • Two trainings to SMEs and TSIs on ecommerce readiness and ecosystem.
  • At least 2 service providers relevant and qualified can support selected SMEs and to get connected with USAID TRADE
  • Brief consultancy report describing the purpose of the consultancy, progress achieved, observations, issues and/or problems encountered, and details of expected follow-on activities by USAID TRADE or its stakeholders.

Period of Performance

This consultancy will take place from: May 1st, 2024, to December 31st, 2024
Level of Effort: 70 working Days


Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in related field with 10+ years of related experience in related business, ecommerce, digital marketing, digital business development, online retail, and/or digital transformation/ecommerce.
  • Knowledge of the ecommerce space that includes marketing strategies, product development, competitive strategies, consumer research, industry trends and usability best practices.
  • Deep knowledge of various platforms especially for cross-border ecommerce and digital marketing and online sales strategies to promote online sales and conversions
  • Proven experience developing, designing, and managing delivery of ecommerce capacity-building in close interaction with leading ecommerce companies and ecosystems.
  • Proven experience in onboarding SMEs on leading global online marketplaces.
  • Excellent relationships with leading marketplaces, payment and logistics companies, and other major ecommerce ecosystem actors active in Egypt; proven ability to convene these actors to dialogues and workshops in Egypt and the MENA region.
  • Experience in conducting needs assessments with target audiences in trade and ecommerce-related capacity-building initiatives.
  • Demonstrated excellent analytical, writing and reporting skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff and partners in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Proficiency in both oral and written communication in both English and Arabic.
