Job Description

Position Overview:

A special educator, also known as a special education teacher, plays a crucial role in supporting and educating students with disabilities. Special educators work with students of all ages and abilities, from early childhood to high school, providing individualized instructions and support to help them achieve their academic and developmental goals. They collaborate closely with parents, other educators, and related service providers to create and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) tailored to meet the unique needs of each student.

Key Responsibilities

1) Assessment and Documentation:

  • Assess students' Pre- academic and academic strengths, weaknesses, and learning needs through formal and informal screenings.
  • Recommend further testing in case the initial screening raised concerns related to student’s physical, developmental, or learning abilities.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student performance, attendance, and behavior.
  • Write progress reports, IEP progress summaries, and other required documentation to communicate student achievements, challenges, and goals to parents, administrators, and other stakeholders.

2) Individualized Instruction:

  • Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) based on assessment results.
  • Adapt and modify curriculum materials and teaching strategies to accommodate students' diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Provide direct instructions to students in individual or small group settings.
  • Use specialized instructional techniques and materials to facilitate learning, such as assistive technology, visual aids, or multisensory approaches.
  • Monitor and track student progress, adjust instructional strategies as needed, and document student achievements.

3) Collaborative Planning and Coordination:

  • Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, and other professionals to develop appropriate educational strategies and accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the development, review, and revision of IEPs.
  • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians to discuss student progress, share strategies for supporting learning at home, and address concerns or questions.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with related service providers, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, and counselors, to ensure students receive necessary support and services.

4) Behavior Management and Support:

  • Establish a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student engagement, self-esteem, and social-emotional development.
  • Implement behavior management strategies and techniques to address challenging behaviors and promote positive behavior.
  • Provide social skills training and support to help students develop appropriate social interactions and relationships.
  • Collaborate with support staff and specialists to develop and implement behavior intervention plans as necessary.

5) Professional Development and Collaboration:

  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in special education, instructional strategies, and relevant laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with other special educators and participate in team meetings, professional learning communities, and staff development activities.
  • Share expertise and resources with colleagues, mentor new special educators, and contribute to the overall improvement of special education programs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in special education or a related field (e.g., education, psychology).Equivalency of UAE Ministry of Education is a must.
  • At least 1 year of Experience working with individuals with disabilities and understanding of various learning needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with students, parents, colleagues, and support staff effectively.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to establish positive relationships with students.
  • Ability to adapt instruction and materials to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Knowledge of assessment and data collection techniques to monitor student progress.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology and adaptive instructional strategies.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional growth and development.
